Perfume is a mixture of essential oils and aromatic compounds, fixatives and solvents, designed to impart a pleasant smell of the human body.
The word perfume used today comes from the Latin "per fumum" and means "through smoke". Perfumery, or the art of making perfumes, began in ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt, but was further developed by the Romans and the Persians.
As per Concentration Level
Essential oils need to be diluted with a solvent because undiluted oils (natural or synthetic) into a strong concentration contain ingredients that cause allergic reactions in the application of the skin. For now most compatible diluent for commercial perfumes is ethanol or a mixture of ethanol and water.
The quality of the scent of perfumes is determined by the percentage of essential oils in the product.
* Parfum: 20% - 30%;
* Espri de Parfum: 12% - 25%;
* Eau de Parfum: 12% - 15%;
* Eau De Toilette: 4% - 10%;
* Eau de Cologne: 2% - 5%;
* Splash Cologne: 1% - 3%;
Perfume essences can also be diluted in unscented natural oils such as jojoba or almond oil. This is how they were used in the ancient world and still used today throughout the Arab world.

Perfumes are broadly grouped into families. These families are key to the design of any perfume.Your reaction to each family will be emotional and individual.
These families are:
FLORAL - Tender & Romantic
This family can be considered as the origin of womens perfumery. The floral perfumes owe their character to numerous natural blossoms which, as much they can all differ from one another, can be termed truly floral. They contain well defined florals like Lily of the Valley or a bouquet of floral effects. Examples are Paris, Beautiful, Diorissimo.
ALDEHYDIC - Classic Elegance
In the 1920s the Aldehydes sparked new directions in perfumery. Thanks to the diffuse radiance of these notes it was possible to achieve an innovative perfume effect with floral notes. Chanel No.5 was the first aldehydic perfume and is characteristic of this family.
FLORIENTAL - Sensual & Passionate
The floriental family is typified by a sweet floral concept which includes lush spicy floral themes and forms the transition to the heavier perfume direction: the Orientals. The Florientals experienced and rebirth in the 80s and 90s with perfumes like Poison and Amarige.
ORIENTAL - Lust & Seduction
Perfumes in this family conjure up associations with the fragrances of the "Orient" as represented by sweet balms and resins of Arabia and/or precious spices from India. Representative Orientals are Shalimar, Opium, and Addict;
CHYPRE - Sophisticated
The chypre family is typified by the contrast between a fresh citrus accord and oakmoss. The family takes its name from the 1-st significant woody mossy perfume created by Coty in 1917. Chypre is the French name for the island of Cyprus. Miss Dior is a classic example as well as Paloma Picasso.
COLOGNE - Light & Pure
Originally based around the Eau de Cologne 4711 theme, now evolved into more complex modern perfumes like Eau Dynamisante. The Citrus Cologne perfumes have a fresh light character due lo the agrumen oils like lemon, bergamont, orange, mandarin and lime combined with floral woody notes.
GREEN - Active & Outdoors
The Green perfume family is typified by leafy-green top notes combined witn a floral heart on a base of dry woods and occasional sweet vanillic notes. Green perfumes have a fresh sparkfing outdoors character. Classic examples are Altiage, Private Collection, and Chanel 19.
OZONIC - Cool & Invigorating
An Ozonic perfume is characterised by fresh, invigorating, sea-like notes and has a young and vibrant effect. It is a combination of green and fruit top notes enriched by a floral heart. The fruity element is often water-fruits, i.e. watermelon. LEau dIssey, Escape and Tommy T are good examples of ozonic perfumes.
FRUITY - Hip & Trendy
Fruity perfumes are those that have a noticeable fruit element, either blended through the top notes or as a central theme in the heart of the fragrance. Fruity perfumes have a soft freshness which exudes youth and happiness. Representative of Fruity perfumes are Amazone, Lauren and Kenzo.
